Description

Apache Tomcat 6.0.0 to 6.0.13, 5.5.0 to 5.5.24, 5.0.0 to 5.0.30, 4.1.0 to 4.1.36, and 3.3 to 3.3.2 treats single quotes (') as delimiters in cookies, which might cause sensitive information such as session IDs to be leaked and allow remote attackers to conduct session hijacking attacks.

No fixed version has been published yet. Until one is, remove or replace the package, or turn off or isolate the affected feature. This page updates when a fix ships.

Weakness

CWE-200: Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor

The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information.

How to prevent it
  • Architecture and Design: Compartmentalize the system to have "safe" areas where trust boundaries can be unambiguously drawn. Do not allow sensitive data to go outside of the trust boundary and always be careful when interfacing with a compartment outside of the safe area. Ensure that appropriate compartmentalization is built into the system design, and the compartmentalization allows for and reinforces privilege separation functionality. Architects and designers should rely on the principle of least privilege to decide the appropriate time to use privileges and the time to drop privileges.
