- Weakness
- CWE-287 Improper Authentication
- Fix
5.5.29- Upgrade org.apache.tomcat:tomcat to this version or later
Description
The autodeployment process in Apache Tomcat 5.5.0 through 5.5.28 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.20, when autoDeploy is enabled, deploys appBase files that remain from a failed undeploy, which might allow remote attackers to bypass intended authentication requirements via HTTP requests.
Affected versions
Maven
| Package | Vulnerable | Fixed in |
|---|---|---|
| org.apache.tomcat:tomcat | >= 5.5.0, < 5.5.29 |
5.5.29 |
| org.apache.tomcat:tomcat | >= 6.0.0, < 6.0.24 |
6.0.24 |
How to fix
Move to the fixed version or later with your package manager, update the lockfile, and run your tests. If the package only arrives through another dependency, upgrade that dependency first. If none of its releases pulls a fixed version yet, force the version with your package manager's override.
org.apache.tomcat:tomcat Maven → 5.5.29
- maven
<dependency><groupId>org.apache.tomcat</groupId><artifactId>tomcat</artifactId><version>5.5.29</version></dependency>- gradle
implementation("org.apache.tomcat:tomcat:5.5.29")
Weakness
CWE-287: Improper Authentication
When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct.
How to prevent it
- Architecture and Design: Use an authentication framework or library such as the OWASP ESAPI Authentication feature.
