Description
Summary
When PILLOW_ALIGNMENT is set above 1, exporting an image to Arrow returns uninitialized heap memory mixed in with the pixel data. That memory can include pixels from images the process freed earlier.
Details
With an alignment above 1, the default allocator pads each row up to aligned_linesize and starts the first row at an aligned offset into the block. It then exports im->blocks[0].ptr as xsize * ysize tightly packed pixels, so exported data includes the padding bytes, and can include a few bytes from before the first row.
Tested vulnerable on 11.2.1, 12.3.0, 4c1ed27a5.
PoC
Whether things leak may depend on allocator configuration. This does show a leak on my Mac.
import os
os.environ["PILLOW_ALIGNMENT"] = "64"
from PIL import Image
# Image A: 64 px wide, so its rows fill the whole aligned stride
a = Image.new("L", (64, 40), 0x41).transpose(Image.Transpose.FLIP_LEFT_RIGHT)
del a
# Image B: 61 px wide, so each row has 3 bytes of padding; its pixels are all 0
b = Image.new("L", (61, 40), 0).transpose(Image.Transpose.FLIP_LEFT_RIGHT)
try:
exported = Image.fromarrow(b, b.mode, b.size).tobytes()
except ValueError as e:
print("Not vulnerable:", e)
else:
if leaked := len(exported) - exported.count(0):
raise RuntimeError(f"{leaked} of {len(exported)} exported bytes are not B's pixels")
Impact
Information disclosure for applications that set PILLOW_ALIGNMENT and export images to Arrow. Likely any image whose row length isn't a multiple of the alignment will do. In a service handling several users' images, one user's exported data can contain pixels from another user's image, or other stale heap contents.
Affected versions

| Package | Vulnerable | Fixed in |
|---|---|---|
| pillow | >= 11.2.1, < 13.0.0 |
13.0.0 |
How to fix
Move to the fixed version or later with your package manager, update the lockfile, and run your tests. If the package only arrives through another dependency, upgrade that dependency first. If none of its releases pulls a fixed version yet, force the version with your package manager's override.
pillow PyPI → 13.0.0
- pip
pip install --upgrade "pillow>=13.0.0"- poetry
poetry add "pillow>=13.0.0"- uv
uv add "pillow>=13.0.0"

Weakness
CWE-226: Sensitive Information in Resource Not Removed Before Reuse
The product releases a resource such as memory or a file so that it can be made available for reuse, but it does not clear or "zeroize" the information contained in the resource before the product performs a critical state transition or makes the resource available for reuse by other entities.
How to prevent it
- Architecture and Design, Implementation: During critical state transitions, information not needed in the next state should be removed or overwritten with fixed patterns (such as all 0's) or random data, before the transition to the next state.
- Architecture and Design, Implementation: When releasing, de-allocating, or deleting a resource, overwrite its data and relevant metadata with fixed patterns or random data. Be cautious about complex resource types whose underlying representation might be non-contiguous or change at a low level, such as how a file might be split into different chunks on a file system, even though "logical" file positions are contiguous at the application layer. Such resource types might require invocation of special modes or APIs to tell the underlying operating system to perform the necessary clearing, such as SDelete (Secure Delete) on Windows, although the appropriate functionality might not be available at the application layer.
CWE-908: Use of Uninitialized Resource
The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized.
How to prevent it
- Implementation: Explicitly initialize the resource before use. If this is performed through an API function or standard procedure, follow all required steps.
- Implementation: Pay close attention to complex conditionals that affect initialization, since some branches might not perform the initialization.
- Implementation: Avoid race conditions (CWE-362) during initialization routines.
- Build and Compilation: Run or compile the product with settings that generate warnings about uninitialized variables or data.
