Description
Summary
If an intermediate constrained CA permits the DNS name foo.example.com, and the leaf certificate has a wildcard in its DNS SAN of *.example.com, python-cryptography's verifier accepts which allows escaping outside of the permitted names.
PoC
#!/usr/bin/env python3
"""Standalone PoC: pyca's DNSConstraint::matches admits a too-broad wildcard SAN.
Setup:
Sub-CA permitted constraint: dNSName = foo.example.com
Leaf SAN: dNSName = *.example.com
Expected: rejection (RFC 5280 §4.2.1.10 + standard wildcard semantics).
Observed: pyca accepts; further, asks server-verifier whether the leaf is
authoritative for `bar.example.com` and pyca answers yes — a sub-CA scope
escape.

How to fix
Move to the fixed version or later with your package manager, update the lockfile, and run your tests. If the package only arrives through another dependency, upgrade that dependency first. If none of its releases pulls a fixed version yet, force the version with your package manager's override.
cryptography PyPI → 49.0.0
- pip
pip install --upgrade "cryptography>=49.0.0"- poetry
poetry add "cryptography>=49.0.0"- uv
uv add "cryptography>=49.0.0"

Weakness
CWE-295: Improper Certificate Validation
The product does not validate, or incorrectly validates, a certificate.
How to prevent it
- Architecture and Design, Implementation: Certificates should be carefully managed and checked to assure that data are encrypted with the intended owner's public key.
- Implementation: If certificate pinning is being used, ensure that all relevant properties of the certificate are fully validated before the certificate is pinned, including the hostname.
