Description

Problem

Requesting invalid or non-existing resources via HTTP triggers the page error handler, which again could retrieve content to be shown as an error message from another page. This leads to a scenario in which the application is calling itself recursively - amplifying the impact of the initial attack until the limits of the web server are exceeded.

This vulnerability is very similar, but not identical, to the one described in TYPO3-CORE-SA-2021-005 (CVE-2021-21359).

Solution

Update to TYPO3 versions 9.5.38 ELTS, 10.4.33 or 11.5.20 that fix the problem described above.

How to fix

Move to the fixed version or later with your package manager, update the lockfile, and run your tests. If the package only arrives through another dependency, upgrade that dependency first. If none of its releases pulls a fixed version yet, force the version with your package manager's override.

Weakness

CWE-405: Asymmetric Resource Consumption (Amplification)

The product does not properly control situations in which an adversary can cause the product to consume or produce excessive resources without requiring the adversary to invest equivalent work or otherwise prove authorization, i.e., the adversary's influence is "asymmetric."

How to prevent it
  • Architecture and Design: An application must make resources available to a client commensurate with the client's access level.
  • Architecture and Design: An application must, at all times, keep track of allocated resources and meter their usage appropriately.
  • System Configuration: Consider disabling resource-intensive algorithms on the server side, such as Diffie-Hellman key exchange.

CWE-674: Uncontrolled Recursion

The product does not properly control the amount of recursion that takes place, consuming excessive resources, such as allocated memory or the program stack.

How to prevent it
  • Implementation: Ensure that an end condition will be reached under all logic conditions. The end condition may include checking against the depth of recursion and exiting with an error if the recursion goes too deep. The complexity of the end condition contributes to the effectiveness of this action.
  • Implementation: Increase the stack size.
