Description

Impact

ZITADEL provides users the possibility to use Time-based One-Time-Password (TOTP) and One-Time-Password (OTP) through SMS and Email.

While ZITADEL already gives administrators the option to define a Lockout Policy with a maximum amount of failed password check attempts, there was no such mechanism for (T)OTP checks.

Patches

2.x versions are fixed on >= 2.50.0

Workarounds

There is no workaround since a patch is already available.

How to fix

Move to the fixed version or later with your package manager, update the lockfile, and run your tests. If the package only arrives through another dependency, upgrade that dependency first. If none of its releases pulls a fixed version yet, force the version with your package manager's override.

Weakness

CWE-287: Improper Authentication

When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct.

How to prevent it
  • Architecture and Design: Use an authentication framework or library such as the OWASP ESAPI Authentication feature.

CWE-297: Improper Validation of Certificate with Host Mismatch

The product communicates with a host that provides a certificate, but the product does not properly ensure that the certificate is actually associated with that host.

How to prevent it
  • Architecture and Design: Fully check the hostname of the certificate and provide the user with adequate information about the nature of the problem and how to proceed.
  • Implementation: If certificate pinning is being used, ensure that all relevant properties of the certificate are fully validated before the certificate is pinned, including the hostname.

CWE-307: Improper Restriction of Excessive Authentication Attempts

The product does not implement sufficient measures to prevent multiple failed authentication attempts within a short time frame.

How to prevent it
  • Architecture and Design: Common protection mechanisms include: Disconnecting the user after a small number of failed attempts Implementing a timeout Locking out a targeted account Requiring a computational task on the user's part.
  • Architecture and Design: Use a vetted library or framework that does not allow this weakness to occur or provides constructs that make this weakness easier to avoid [REF-1482]. Consider using libraries with authentication capabilities such as OpenSSL or the ESAPI Authenticator. [REF-45]
